PERSONALITY

Luna may seem weird, but really, it’s just the world isn’t ready for her.

Or not. Luna is a believer. She’ll accept anything as fact when it sounds like fiction, so long there is a logical and well-researched argument behind it. This acceptance goes beyond her passion for the supernatural; Luna does not discriminate against anyone, in the sense that everyone’s considered a friend until proven otherwise (and sometimes even then they retain their friend-status). Luna has always had difficulties making friends and has always been so easy to make fun of, so when she feels she has any friends at all, she intends to keep them. While she’s an independent thinker in her own right, she needs strong relationships, and she needs to know that they won’t abandon her.

Relationship issues aside, Luna is a very perceptive person, but she often misinterprets what she sees. Events and facts that would normally be interpreted as something completely normal will be used – in a logical way, of course – to argue for things that aren’t so natural. Despite this error in judgment, Luna maintains her status as a bright young girl.

APPEARANCE

Luna has always been rounder than the average girl. You’ll see very few of her bones poking out beneath the surface of her skin; rather, she’s got a soft, almost ‘squishy’ sort of feel to her. Her face is just as round and soft, with chubby cheeks and an over-round, slightly upturned nose. Her grey eyes are abnormally large and tend to be off-putting, always seeming to stare intensely at something far off.

Luna’s hair is dirty blonde and long, falling just past her waist. Unfortunately, Luna has neglected the upkeep needed to maintain her long hair. As a result, her hair is scraggly and flat, and the ends peter off in a sad sort of way. Despite the lack of proper hair care (who has time for that?), Luna keeps herself presentable, but it’s clear from the details that she’s not the sort of person who busies herself too much with her appearance.

HISTORY

FAMILY HISTORY
The Lovegoods are only recent purebloods. They have a very short magical history, and their unfortunate love of the very bizarre has given little respect in the magical community – more amused tolerance than anything.

Luna’s great-grandfather Gaston Lovegood was the first wizard in the family. He was a new citizen in the country. The arrival of his letter was considered odd by his family, but surely it was a custom of their new home and they should respect that invitation. Thus, Gaston Lovegood attended Hogwarts. He went through all seven years, embracing the magical culture as a foreigner embraces the culture of a new country. When it was over, rather than continuing in that world, Gaston married a sweet, round-faced country girl with the world’s worst accent.

Their union produced a normal child, Doyle. Gaston wasn’t surprised – they had assimilated by then. Doyle, who begrudged his lack of magical ability, became a fierce follower of magical news. While he was removed from that world, he did his best, exploring the occult and whatever magic his father remembered from his school years. Eventually he settled down, but retaining his love for the bizarre, named his son Xenophilius.

Perhaps it was Doyle’s wife, who never really did talk about her origins, that added to the magical genes Xenophilius possessed. Whatever recovered that part of the Lovegood’s spontaneous magical ability, it was clear from an early age that Xenophilius was like his grandfather. Doyle was thrilled. He transferred to his son his passion for all areas of magical study, which unfortunately had been poorly researched by an outsider. Xenophilius’ interpretations, as a result, tend to be a little off.

At Hogwarts, Xenophilius’ zeal for everything attracted the attention of a muggleborn Ravenclaw, Laney Vogel. Their relationship was awkward at best. Laney was a fierce conspiracy theorist who never needed support for her theories. Xenophilius, on the other hand, required hard facts – even if they were wrong or misinterpreted – to support his wild claims. They found a happy medium somewhere after school, when Laney became more interested in experimental work and Xenophilius decided his interests lay in informing the world of what they refused to believe.

PERSONAL HISTORY
Luna was born on a sunny July day to the delight of her parents. She was a very serene child, but so much like her parents that she couldn’t relate to the other children. Luna had a very difficult time making friends: she was clingy, and she thought everyone was interested in what she found interesting. Her passion tended to get her made fun of, and her early years in primary school were so unpleasant that her mother decided to home school her. At this point, Laney was freeing herself from the confines of Ministry-sanctioned work and decided to be more freelance in her experimental opportunities.

Luna developed close relationships with her parents. They were her parents, but they were also her friends. She was devastated when her mother died. She was nine years old, full of life, and it seemed so unnatural, unnecessary.

Laney had decided to try something new that day. Luna sat at the table, watching her mother do rather complicated charm-work. There was one last wave of a wand, a puff of smoke, and an explosion that threw her mother across the room. That was the end; there may have been a ‘bang’, but it seemed so pointless that Luna couldn’t expect that it really happened. She didn’t believe in her mother’s death, even though she had been witness to it, for two whole months.

Logic and reasoning eventually won out. At that time, Luna’s father was getting into the habit of being without his wife. He was grieving still – the whole family was – but he was managing to be normal (well, Xenophilius’ kind of normal) again. He took Luna under his wing and introduced her to more of his world, if only to distract her.

Luna thrived in that strange world her father imagined and researched. She found that she didn’t just enjoy the distraction, she enjoyed the actual subject. She learned to accept everything, to find logical reasons for the existence of something that most people wouldn’t even dream of. Two years later, to her and her father’s delight, Luna received her letter to Hogwarts.

Though Luna found the same social problems she had in primary school (no one understood her!), her acceptance into this magical world she had been studying with her father was enough for her. People made fun of her, they even seemed to call her Looney…but Luna was calm about it all. Everything has a way of working out.

And it did, somewhat. In her fourth year, she found friends. As a member of Dumbledore’s Army, she fought fiercely with the people who were now her very best friends ever, and she proved herself more than just a dreamer.

Her fifth year was happier than the previous one by far. She had proven useful, and she found her acceptance as a true friend increasing. Sixth year promised to be just as uplifting, but the War got in the way…
